Verses of Love (2008)

Fahri bin Abdillah is an Indonesian student striving to attain his master's degree at Al-Azhar. He wrestles with the heat and dust of Egypt, grappling with various goals and the simplicity of life. He sustains himself by working as a translator of religious books. Fahri pursues all his goals with great enthusiasm except one: marriage. Fahri is a devout man of integrity. He does not engage in dating before marriage and struggles with articulation when facing women. Throughout his life, only a few women have been close to him: his grandmother, mother, and sister. Moving to Egypt changes this. Enter Maria Girgis, a neighbor in the same apartment complex, a Coptic Christian who admires the Qur'an and admires Fahri. Admiration turns into love, yet Maria's love remains confined to her diary. Then there's Nurul, the daughter of a renowned Islamic scholar also studying at Al-Azhar. Fahri actually has feelings for this sweet girl. However, his sense of inferiority, stemming from being the child of farmers, prevents him from expressing any emotion toward Nurul. Nurul, in turn, becomes uncertain and always speculates about Fahri's feelings. Next is Noura, another neighbor who suffers abuse from her own father. Fahri empathizes deeply with Noura and wants to help her, but it's only empathy, nothing more. Unfortunately, Noura expects more from Fahri, leading to significant trouble when she accuses Fahri of assaulting her. Lastly, there is Aisha. Her beautiful eyes enchant Fahri. Since an incident in the metro where Fahri defended Islam against rigid and conservative accusations, Aisha has fallen in love with Fahri. Fahri, in turn, cannot deceive his own heart.
